Making 18650 Lithium Ion Battery Packs

After the failure of my third model store bought LiPo battery in my Bachmann Shay and Consolidation ("Connie")I decide that I would make my own battery packs using 18650 Li-ion batteries.

Using the information in this blog as a guide, I have successfully constructed two (2) battery packs that give me a nominal 14.4V 5200mAHr battery using 8 x 18650 Samsung Tagged 2600MAHr cells wire series/parallel (4S2P).

Building the packs was not as daunting as I first presumed I just took my time and followed the wiring diagram.

In the 2P configuration Voltage stays the same and the capacity doubles, in the 2S configuration the Voltage doubles and the capacity remain unchanged.
It is assumed that both cells are the same voltage and capacity.

Method;

  • Put the cells into brackets and solder the tags together to make larger capacity cells.
  • Connect the negative pole (-ve) to the positive pole (+ve) of the next cell -ve1 to +ve2, -ve 2 to +ve 3 and so on
  • Wire the Management board with output wire and the cell connection wires
  • Connect management board wires to battery
  • Connect balance charge leads to respective cells.
