Cane
Diesel Loco.
This loco was originally a scratchbuilt battery powered electro/mechanical
driven 32mm loco that was given to me by a friend.
I modified it to run on 45mm track by installing a USA
Trains motor block (with suspension detail parts from an Aristocraft "Lil Critter" and a Bachmann Big hauler), HobbyKing Radio Control equipment and a sound card with delay.
Radio Control & Electronic Components:-
- HobbyKing 2.4Ghz 4Ch Transmitter (Tx) Version2 Mode 1, (Throttle on the RIGHT)
- HobbyKing 2.4Ghz Receiver T6A-V2, compatible only with HobbyKing T4A & T6AVersion2 transmitters, (a 4 channel Rx comes with the Tx/Rx combo but any extra Rx’s have to be 6 channel, because that is all that is offered by HobbyKing)
- HobbyKing Turnigy TGY-20A Brushed Electronic Speed Controller (ESC)
- HobbyKing HXT 9g/1.6Kg/.12 Micro Servo operating a Double Pole Double Throw (DPDT) toggle switch for direction control.
- Ten (10), 2700mAH NiMH, tagged 1.2V AA cells to give a nominal 12V Battery.
- 3A Polyswitch, from WES Components, is used as a circuit breaker mounted on the battery.
- The sound board with a PICAXE
08M2 chip used to delay the motor signal so that the sound
builds in response to throttle and then the motor drives.
- This is the same sound card that is in the LGB Side Rod. For full schematics, description and copy of the program refer to that page.
- A "Dick Smith" K-2621 “Flashing Brooch kit” board is used to flash a roof mounted LED to simulate a rotating beacon powered off the battery via the ON/OFF switch. Unfortunately Dick Smith is no longer operating.
Component Locations:-
- Speaker is mounted behind the front grill.
- Battery pack containing nine (9) cells is mounted on the chassis, one (1) cell is mounted separately behind the speaker. Charging is via an audio socket on the rear wall of the cabin.
- The Sound board and ESC are mounted on top of the battery pack.
- Servo mounted on Battery pack protruding into cabin with switch lever inside cabin.
- The Dick Smith K-2621 “Flashing Brooch kit” is glued to the cab front wall.
- The ON/OFF/Charge switch is mounted on a bracket attached to the rear wall of the cabin, wiring is covered by a box made from a mint tin.
